Io Sivertsen (NO)

The film begins in the summer of 2021. A protest camp had been set up in Repparfjord in Finnmark, the northern part of Norway. It was organised by Natur og Ungdom (Nature and Youth) and Redd Repparfjord (Save the Repparfjord) following several years of resistance. After 100 days, the camp prevented a copper mine and a marine landfill from being established in the Nussir mountain and Repparfjord.

This is an indispensable area for the Sámi, indigenous peoples living across Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The company Nussir ASA describes themselves as a “pioneer in the climate context”; the rationale for this being that the world needs copper and minerals to change from oil and gas to green energy. Capitalist system tries selling itself as a solution to the problem that it creates.

By utilising a patchwork of imagery, sound and graphics, this film lingers between the feelings of hope, fear and worry for the future. The film travels seamlessly between a protest camp in northern Norway, a classroom, herds of reindeer, oil platforms, and a bedroom. Through its interrogative tone, it raises serious questions by documenting a generational sense of worry; of the uncertainty of times to come.
